Say What?

There are a number of terms you’ll hear in Blogshares that you don’t hear in normal life. So here’s a bit of a lexicon of terms and their meanings. You can find a more complete one at http://blogshares.com/help.php?node=23 but these are the ones I hear most often.

Snipe/Sniping - This means to buy up ideas from the public market that you did not make drop yourself. Sniping is legal play and can be a good way to get those missing ideas you need. If you are the victim of sniping don’t complain, everyone gets sniped at some point, it’s just the game.

I sniped it from right under his nose!

Damn, sniped again!

Tick/Clock - These are the ΒΌ hour marks (plus up to 7 minutes) when ideas drop and blog PE levels are adjusted. Everyone has been caught by the tick. If you index a blog on the tick it may well get absorbed into the game and never drop. If you use an artefact over the tick it might not have any effect!

I’ll do it in a minute, just waiting for the clock

Fixing - This is the action done to make an industry profitable again. To fix an industry you basically sell lots of ideas from that industry onto the public market and index a drop onto them, then buy back the ideas left. It’s seldom as easy as that though!

Stupid industry’s falling, need to fix it

Cleaning - This is using strategic voting to re-position industries into or out of a blog’s top5 industries list.

That’s Latvia clean, time to make some money!

Asshat - As far as I’m aware there used to be a swearword filter in the IRC channel, to get round this people used the word “asshat” in place of “asshole” and it’s just stuck.

why won’t they talk to me? Asshats!

what asshat is clogging the PQ?

#bs - This is the shorthand way of saying #blogshares - the game’s official IRC channel. It shouldn’t really be used as “#bs” could in fact be another channel altogether!

is MrP in #bs? He was there earlier

PQ - Priority Queue. This is a queue of blogs that premium members(and C) have requested be indexed. It’s priority as there is another(slow) queue that’s always running.

looks like the PQ is stuck again

Drop - This is what happens at the tick/clock when ideas are “dropped” onto the public market from whichever qualifying industries have been indexed since the last ‘drop’.

Can you catch English on the next drop please, I gotta split.

Port(s) - This is short for portfolio(s) and is usually referring to your shares portfolios.

Just going through my ports looking for deads.

(Ultra-)Rares - Ideas that have either few existing or more commonly ideas in blogless industries.

I only need rares to finish my ideas collection, need to make some bids!

Incomings/Outgoings
- Simply the number of other blogs listed in the game pointing to(incoming) and from(outgoing) a certain blog.

If it doesn’t have incomings it won’t drop!

Links - Used in the questions, “can you link it?” or “does it have links?” It’s referring to incomings & outgoings. Linking a blog means pointing to it from your own game blog so that it shows as an incoming on the blog’s page.

dude can you link this for me, I’m all out of blogs?

Arte - Artefacts. Used for various tasks related to shares play, artefacts are built with accumulated ideas.

I can’t hype it for you I’m almost out of artes

how many artes do you have on this blog?

PP - Pressure Public, an artefact trick to buy all available ideas at once. Used in Cycling blogs.

I saw this great blog just sold and PP’d it straight away. It’s all mine now!

Cycling/Turning - The act of pushing a blog’s PE level to the highest saleable limit(usually around 650-750), selling your shares, thus dropping the PE again, and quickly PPing to buy them back. Usually a hype is done after this to get the PE to a stable level.

I want to cycle this blog but don’t have the artes to hype after the PP, do you have artes on it?

If you need some money just turn some blogs for gawds ache!

    Great post!

Cleaning can also refer to cleaning a blog. That is, going through it and voting for and against to get the correct votes in and out. It is also done by Index Managers to whole industries in an effort to keep the index correct.
